Open Demat Account Without Visiting a Branch

July 24, 2026 - By admin

There was a time when opening a Demat account meant visiting a bank or brokerage branch, filling out physical forms, and submitting notarized copies of documents in person. That is no longer necessary. This article explains how the entire process to open a Demat account can now be completed remotely, without stepping into a branch office.

How the Branch Visit Requirement Was Removed

The shift away from in-branch account opening became possible primarily due to two developments: Aadhaar-based electronic KYC and video-based In-Person Verification (IPV). Together, these allow identity confirmation, address verification, and applicant authentication to be completed digitally, removing the need for a physical meeting between the applicant and the Depository Participant (DP).

What You Need to Complete the Process Remotely

To open Demat account from home, you will need:

  • A smartphone or computer with a stable internet connection
  • PAN card details
  • Aadhaar number linked to an active mobile number
  • A digital copy or clear photograph of your address proof, if different from Aadhaar
  • Bank account details, including a cancelled cheque or bank statement
  • A quiet, well-lit space for the video-based verification step

Step 1: Choose an Online-Enabled Depository Participant

Not all DPs offer a fully remote process, though most major providers now do. Confirm that the provider supports complete online onboarding, including video-based IPV, before starting the application.

Step 2: Complete the Digital Application Form

Fill in your personal details, including name, address, date of birth, and PAN information, directly through the provider’s website or mobile application. This step does not require any physical documentation to be submitted in person.

Step 3: Verify Identity Through Aadhaar-Based e-KYC

Aadhaar-based verification uses an OTP sent to your registered mobile number to confirm your identity remotely. This step also auto-fills much of your personal information, drawing from your Aadhaar records, which reduces manual data entry.

Step 4: Complete Video-Based In-Person Verification

Instead of visiting a branch, applicants complete IPV through a live video call with a representative or a recorded selfie-based process. During this step, you may be asked to hold your PAN card up to the camera, read out a random code, or answer a basic verification question.

Step 5: Link and Verify Your Bank Account

Provide your bank account details for fund settlement purposes. Many providers verify this instantly through a small penny-drop transaction, which confirms that the account is active and registered in your name, without requiring any physical bank visit.

Step 6: e-Sign the Application

Once verification is complete, sign the application using an Aadhaar-linked e-signature, authenticated through an OTP. This digital signature carries the same legal standing as a handwritten one and finalizes your application remotely.

Step 7: Receive Confirmation and Account Details

After the DP reviews your application, your Demat account is activated, and your account number along with login credentials are sent through email or SMS. This entire process, from application to activation, is generally completed within one to two working days.

Advantages of the Remote Process

Completing the process without a branch visit offers several practical advantages. It removes the need to take time off work or travel to a physical location, allows the application to be completed at any time that suits the applicant, and reduces the overall time required compared to paper-based methods.

Points to Keep in Mind

While the process is fully remote, applicants should ensure they have a stable internet connection during the video verification step, since technical interruptions can require the process to be repeated. It is also important to complete the application in a single sitting where possible, since incomplete applications may need to be restarted depending on the provider’s system.

Conclusion

The ability to open a Demat account without visiting a branch reflects a broader shift toward digital-first financial services in India. With Aadhaar-based verification, video-based IPV, and electronic signatures now standard across most providers, applicants can complete the entire process from their home or office, saving both time and effort compared to the earlier branch-based system.
